Most of the couples I photograph are planning a wedding on an island they don't live on, in a country whose paperwork they've never dealt with, months before they'll ever set foot on it. That's the part nobody tells you is the hard part — not the dress, not the venue, the paperwork. So here's the honest version, from eight years of standing at the back of these ceremonies.
The marriage licence — the part people worry about most, and shouldn't
Barbados has no residency requirement and no mandatory waiting period before you can marry. Both of you apply in person at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Bridgetown, Monday to Friday, 8:30am–3:30pm — and if your documents are in order, the licence can be issued the same day. Bring valid passports, birth certificates, and your return tickets. If either of you was previously divorced, bring the original Decree Absolute (or certified copy); if widowed, the marriage and death certificates. Anything not in English needs a certified translation. The licence is valid for three months, so you can't apply too far ahead of the date.
Practically, that means: plan to arrive at least a day or two before your ceremony so the licence application isn't the first thing you do off the plane, and keep the whole document set together in your carry-on, not checked luggage. (This is a genuine account of the process — the government and courts publish the exact requirements, and I've linked the primary sources at the end rather than ask you to take my word for it.)
What actually needs deciding before you book flights
- Venue and rough guest count — this decides everything else downstream, including whether you need a full-day or half-day photography block.
- Season — Barbados is warm year-round, but the wetter months (roughly June through November) mean venues build in covered backup locations, which is worth asking about directly.
- Who's marrying you — a licensed marriage officer must perform the ceremony; most hotels and venues already work with one, but confirm it isn't left until the final week.
- Your own travel logistics for the licence appointment — build it into the itinerary as its own errand, not a "we'll squeeze it in" afternoon.
How this usually goes, from the photography side
My own process is simple on purpose: you send me your date, venue, and vision; I respond within 24 hours with real availability, not a maybe; we get on a short call to walk through the day and the light; a signed contract and retainer hold the date. From there, the timeline gets finalized about two weeks out, so nothing is guessed on the day itself. You'll have a sneak peek within 48–72 hours of the wedding and the full gallery in 6–8 weeks — long enough to edit properly, short enough that you're not waiting until next year to relive it.
